Senior Portraits in the COVID19 Era

My son is about to graduate. Yay 2020 grads! Hats off to ya in this challenging unknown time. Will there be a ceremony? Will there be any spring events at all?

At least one thing I knew I could make happen was senior portraits of my boy from the comfort of our own home. So that was our Saturday afternoon, after giving him a haircut on my own (not abnormal for us, so at least this wasn’t a new experience). To help out the whole class I’ve volunteered to do the same for all 12 of his classmates.

How does this work? I head to their homes and we shoot in the front or back yard, posing a bit with masks or behind elements that give the feel that things are currently in their way, like it or not. We get some fun ones, some more serious ones, a change of clothing, something to remember these special, maybe intense days in which our graduates headed into the unknown. We’ll make it donation based since some families may be unable to work these days.

For those I plan to shoot who aren’t living with me (and I’m one of the lucky ones who has a full house of 4 of my own kids plus two others), I can shoot from 10 feet away and I plan to wear my own mask though it won’t be my N95 because I’ll have to give instructions. I also want to get a few shots of the student doing online school, but shot through the window from the outside. Could be a fun one to add to the storytelling lot of them.
